Honouring The Legacy of Tyler Shaule

Written by Matt Lockhart

On April 24th, we lost a visionary leader, a beloved friend, and the heart behind Forest Cliff Camps — Tyler Shaule.

Tyler’s journey with Forest Cliff began in 1991 as a camper. In 2000, he joined the staff team, where he met his wife, Janet. Over the years, he served as Head Counsellor, built the original Rockwall in 2001, became Assistant Director, and led as Executive Director from 2013. In 2023, as our team grew, he stepped into the role of CEO, a role he filled with passion, wisdom, and a deep love for camp.

Under Tyler’s direction and with his leadership…

  • Organizational goals, values, and behaviours were identified, exemplified, and incorporated across all camp experiences
  • Camper registrations have increased year by year to almost 4000 campers
  • Day Camps launched in 2015 to bring all the fun of overnight camp closer to home. What started with 3 partner churches in London hosting 473 children has grown to 3 mobile teams in 12 partner church locations and over 2200 Day Camp registrations
  • Spring hiring increased from 12 Spring Staff to 38 Spring Staff, hosting retreats for 20 groups
  • New infrastructure was created at the overnight camp, including the construction of three new staff buildings (2016 and 2023), three multi-use porch areas, a new TUCK shop (2023), and the complete renovation of the Health Care Centre (2017) and Durley Lodge (2023)
  • Many activities were added and improved, including a new sheltered archery range (2024) and the new Forest Cliff Raceway (2024)
  • Through visionary leadership, camp saw significant growth in donor engagement, ensuring long-term sustainability for the Camp.

Tyler’s Mission For Camp

Tyler shaped Forest Cliff into what it is today. A place where kids feel safe, seen, and known. A place to build lifelong friendships, ask big questions, and experience the love of Jesus.

His motto, unforgettable, life-changing experiences, continues to guide us because Tyler believed every child deserves that kind of week.

His legacy lives on through the thousands of lives he impacted and through his wife and three boys, who carry his strength and kindness.

Continue Tyler’s vision for Forest Cliff Camps

If you want to honour Tyler’s life and continue his legacy, consider giving to Forest Cliff’s Summer Fund, General Fund, or Memorial. Let’s keep building what he started. A place where kids can just be kids, and lives are changed forever.

Please keep Forest Cliff Camps and the Shaule family in your prayers as we enter this summer season. As we carry forward Tyler’s legacy and prepare to welcome campers, we do so with heavy hearts and deep gratitude for the impact he made. Your prayers and support mean so much during this time.
